17 Dec 1840 - Fred Moor to Joseph M. Black, of Rutherford, North Carolina.

However, John H. Dyson of Wilkes County stepped in here. (When he sold the land lot to the county to build a county seat, he reserved the right to his choice of one lot facing the square and one other. He exercised his rights and took a prosperous  tavern).

6 May 1836 - Inferior Court to Hubbard Barker

(C-361).  This was the property of Arthur Erwin, site of Erwin Hotel (he called it a house and a tavern). Later this was owned by Dr. F.A. Nichols . Erwin sold part of Lot 12 to M. J. Lewis for his medical shop. (This was occupied after his death by Dr. Dean and Dr. Harvey). (This property, for 40 years, was the site of the Mashburn Hotel, run by Mrs. Alice Kemp Mashburn (1866 - 1944). She had two sons, Maynard, born 1890 and Marcus, born 1890. Her husband, James B. Mashburn, died in 1892. She was an excellent cook and her boarding house was the "place to eat").

(east half) 6 Apr 1844 - Eli T. Wilmot, of Franklin County to C. B. Wellborn with the east half of 13 adjoining Arthur Erwin on the east, and the public square on the south.

(west half) 13 Mar 1845 - Wiley B. Hutchins to C. B. Wellborn.

9 Jun 1853 - C. B. Wellborn to George N. Lester The law office now occupied by Lester, land and office (K-333).

Unknown 1853 - C. B. Wellborn of Whitfield County, Georgia, to David Walker the storehouse and lot, which he was occupying. (This was the site of Walker's Store. David Walker married Theodocia Wellborn. This deed covered land commencing at George N. Lester's law office, running up with the public square to the office occupied by Dr. Dean and Dr. Harvey, and then running north with Erwin's land. It also covered the land between the store and Erwin's, the land on the west end between the house and Lester's office, and land north of the office.

It included his cow lot between W. A. Lewis and Jesse Stanley's shop and lot, the garden lot, the stable, and the carriage house. It was bounded on the north by J. W. & A. C. McAfee, the tobacco factory, and Arthur Erwin) (K-263).

George N. Lester (13 March 1824 - 1892)   An attorney and the son of Richard Henry Lester and Mary Sims Lester. He practiced law, in Cumming, and later moved to Cobb County. He was very prominent in legal and political circles. He and his wife Margaret L. Irwin had 7 children, 5 boys and 2 girls).
