Did you know  the chase and trucker scenes from Smokey and the Bandit were filmed in Forsyth County?

Hwy 400 from Union Hill Road to Hwy 306 was opened in Nov 1976. On September 23, 1976, the film crew was here to film before the exit signs were put up. Up at Hwy 20 there was a convoy...... of semis and further down, just below 141,  I believe was the staging area for all the state patrol and county sheriff cars. One of the residents looked out his back window, saw all the law cars. He locked his doors and called the sheriff. He thought there were escaped convicts.

On that day, I had to wait for a doctor at the emergency room to stitch up my daughter who had been attacked by a neighbor's dog. He had trouble getting through the crowd on the Hwy 20 bridge watching. Nowadays you just have trouble getting across the 20 bridge anytime. For out-of-towners that's where they put the new Wal-Mart , the Home Depot and the new hospital.

I always like to watch the movie because I logged many an hour on 400 taking my husband back and forth for dialysis from 1976 to 1988. It was all woods and very dark at night or early morning. At 10 pm I have come all the way from Northside Hospital without seeing any other cars.
